Jonathan Gertler is one of the leading trial lawyers in California. He is recognized among both the personal injury and class action trial bars. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the most prestigious and selective trial lawyer organizations in the country, and a Fellow of the American Board of Trial Advocates. In 2006 Jon earned the Trial Lawyer of the Year Award from the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association, and was a finalist for the Consumer Attorney of the Year Award from the Consumer Attorneys of California. Jon was a finalist for SFTLA's Trial Lawyer of the Year Award again in 2008. Jon is a Northern California Class Action Super Lawyer, and regularly lectures on class action and trial practice subjects.
Jon has successfully handled catastrophic injury and death cases for his clients since 1984. Six months after becoming a lawyer, in his first jury trial, Jon won a verdict of more than $1 million for a cement mason disabled in a construction accident. In recent jury trials, he has won verdicts of over $3.1 million in an aviation accident case, almost $7.5 million in a railroad crossing accident case, and nearly $3 million in a truck crash case. In his last consumer trial, against a founding partner of a major defense firm, Jon and Mark Chavez obtained a judgment worth nearly $12 million in consumer refunds, credits and fees. Jon is currently lead or co-counsel in wage-and-hour and consumer class actions against both small and large corporations.
Jon is also a leader in trial lawyer organizations. He is past president of Consumer Attorneys of Marin and was 2011 President of San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association. He has served as President of Consumer Attorneys of Marin three times.
Jon has a long history of commitment to providing legal help to the poor. He is President of the Board of Directors of Legal Aid of Marin, and previously sat on the boards of the Consumer Attorneys of California, Bay Area Legal Aid, and was Vice President of the Consumer Federation of California. He is also on the Advisory Board of East Bay Community Law Center.
